With long, sun-soaked days settling over the Otter Valley, the surrounding countryside is alive with endless green, wildlife and warm summer air. There’s every excuse to linger outside a little longer, glass in hand.
From fresh, garden-led feasting in our restaurant to outdoor, wood-fired dining at The Folly, summer here is best spent in the open air. Think countryside walks, live music drifting through the garden and long, lazy afternoons that roll effortlessly into warm evenings, summertime, the PIG way.
Step Outside: Summer Walks & Garden Wanders
There’s no better time to explore the Otter Valley than the warmer months. Right from our doorstep, you’ll find rolling countryside, woodland walks, and gentle rambles that show off Devon at its freshest – from blossom‑lined lanes to bluebell‑dotted woods.
Our team has pulled together some of their favourite local walks, perfect for working up an appetite before lunch or stretching things out after breakfast.
As soon as the weather hints at it, we head outdoors.
Summer means relaxed drop‑in dining at The Folly - our rustic outdoor eatery tucked into the grounds. Wood‑fired dishes, freshly baked pizzas, cool drinks, and laid‑back beats, all served with birdsong and fresh air.
No booking needed. Dogs welcome. Sunshine encouraged (but not essential).
Unwind in the Potting Sheds
Our treatment rooms are some of our favourite spots to hide out, tucked away in the peace and quiet of the Kitchen Garden. Sinking into a massage, facial or scrub while the rest of the world does its thing feels like a really good kind of treat.

Golden hour: Buttered & Baked
After a long, countryside ramble, there’s only one sensible next step. Settle in for Buttered & Baked - generous, comforting and proudly un‑fussy, ‘perfect-for-3pm’ kind of moreish treats.
Think warm, savoury, cheesy, buttery bites and plentiful homebaked sweet things to finish. It’s the perfect pairing for a mid-week spring wander, whether you’re staying the night or just dropping in.

Stream Wagons
Close to nature, situated at the bottom of the drive from the main house in a private garden, our five Stream Wagons are as you might have guessed, tucked away next to a ‘babbling brook’, curiously named the River Gitt, which runs through the village on its way to the Otter valley. We have learnt a thing or two since creating our first Huts and Wagons 12 years ago, these latest incarnations are better fitted out than most hotel bedrooms whilst still stylishly designed using reclaimed timber, with a double bed, an en-suite bathroom, a wood burning stove and your own sun soaked terrace. It’s in the bathing department these really come into their own with double ended baths and monsoon showers, indoors and outside! We honestly don’t believe there are huts like these anywhere in the world. Please note the Wagons are 3/4 of a mile from the main house, where our PIG Landrover can pick you up or drop you off between locations. The perfect adult's only getaway.
Big Comfy Luxe
Located in the main house with super-king sized bed, walk-in monsoon shower and freestanding bath, some of which are in the bedroom.
The Horsebox
Located on the ground floor of the stable yard, with the original stable partitions, paved flooring and other quirky features with a super-king four-poster bed, cosy lounge area, freestanding bath and walk-in monsoon shower.
The Attic
Located on the 2nd floor of the main house featuring the original wooden beams with a super-king size bed, a freestanding bath in the bedroom, separate lounge area and large walk-in monsoon shower.
The Hayloft
Located on the 1st floor of the stable yard, open plan layout with a very spacious bedroom and seating area, super-king four poster bed with a freestanding bath in the bedroom, a dressing room area and separate monsoon shower room – very romantic!
Family Rooms
Located in the Stable yard, our Family Rooms feature a large double bedroom with a rolltop bath and monsoon shower, and a bunk room for children up to the age of 12 with it's own tv and monsoon shower. Features family bathroom with 6ft monsoon shower and rolltop bath. Each room has its own ‘larder’ stocked with snacks, drinks and a Nespresso machine.
The Laundry
Located on the 1st floor of the main house with an array of original and unique features, super-king four-poster bed, separate spacious lounge area, bathroom featuring a circular copper bath tub with a monsoon shower above.
Chicken Run Cottage
Overlooking the wild meadow, stream and orchard, this cottage has a warm sitting room with a wood burner set in a large inglenook fireplace and open-plan kitchenette. Just as perfect for two as it is for four.
Stream Cottage
Overlooking the delightfully named River Gitt, this cottage has a porch entrance and large hallway leading to a light comfy sitting room with an adjacent small galley kitchenette. Upstairs is a large master bedroom with four poster bed and en suite bathroom with roll top bath and shower. The second bedroom can be either a twin or double and has an en suite bathroom with shower. Just as perfect for two as it is for four. The cottages are about 3/4 mile away from the hotel - a short beautiful walk up a private drive or we can collect you in the PIG Landrover.
Old Thatch Cottage
Old Thatch Cottage sits within the original walled garden and is accessed directly from the garden. Full of character and slightly higgledy piggledy, it has original stone flagged floors downstairs, big original large fireplace with log burner in the double aspect sitting room, and a generous sized kitchen with an aga. Two staircases lead up to a large master bedroom with four poster bed and en suite bathroom with roll top bath and shower, and a second bedroom which again can be either a twin or double and has an en suite bathroom with shower. Great for groups or an idyllic countryside escape for two. The cottages are about 3/4 mile away from the hotel - a short beautiful walk up a private drive or we can collect you in the PIG landrover.

Our summer Garden Parties are back for 2026!
...and this year is extra special, as 2026 marks 15 fantastic years of THE PIG!
The ultimate way to spend a summer weekend! We’ll be throwing open the doors to our lawn in the Devon countryside from Friday 10th July and Saturday 11th July for a proper garden party with great feasting food, live, local music and cracking entertainment to let the good times roll.
